The Arctic

The icy fang that bites and blows until I shrink with cold.

Royal Air Force Regiment Northern Exposure 3 Expedition

In 2011 the RAF Regiment Northern Exposure Expedition hoped to leave from Cape Discovery and ski, walk and swim their way unsupported across the pack ice to the Geographic North Pole - a distance of 416 nautical miles (770 km). However, the weather prevented us from even getting to Cape Discovery. The team will return to the Arctic in 2015 to try again but in the mean time will conduct a full mission rehearsal in 2014 by skiing to the Magnetic North Pole (1996 location).

This 350 nautical mile trip across pack ice which is always shifting, leads which crack open and with pressure ridges build into massive walls of ice chunks with temperatures often below -40 C. The aim of this training Expedition is to reach the Magnetic Pole as quickly as we can and see how far we can get back towards Resolute Bay in 35 days. This is a personal challenge against the elements which will take as long as it takes.
